We are a large department of over 400 working personnel that respond to over 13,000 alarms a year. We serve more than 400,000 residents as well as tens of thousands of students attending our two major post-secondary schools. London is a growing city both culturally and physically, constantly expanding its city limits. The ‘Forest’ city encompasses the Thames River, surrounded by the Great Lakes, and provides easy access to major transportation networks.

Firefighter

Academic:

  • Grade 12 Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Current IFSAC and/or ProBoard Endorsed Certification in:
    • NFPA 1001, Firefighter Level 1
    • NFPA 1001, Firefighter Level 2
    • NFPA 1072 Hazmat Awareness
    • NFPA 1072 Hazmat Operations
    • Other IFSAC and/or Pro Board Certifications will be considered an asset

First Aid:

  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification

Criminal Reference Check:

  • Criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector screen within past 12 months

Physical Testing:

  •  OFAI Candidate Testing Services

Driver’s License:

  • Valid unrestricted Ontario class D driver’s license with a Z endorsement
  • Proof of 3-year uncertified driver’s abstract

Communications Operator

Communication Operators serve as the vital link between the public and firefighting crews, answering 911 calls, quickly analyzing the information received, and dispatching the appropriate resources.

The Communication Operator works in close cooperation with all members of the Fire Services team to ensure excellence in the delivery of external and internal emergency, and non-emergency related customer services.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or Equivalent
  • Completion of a Community College program specific to emergency communications and dispatch or equivalent experience

Criminal Reference Check:

  • Criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector screen within past 12 months

Additional Training and Licenses:

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and within an assigned timeframe.
  • Ability to type/keyboard 40 words per minute.
  • Experience using computers, software applications and programs and telephone and radio equipment used for communications and dispatch.
  • Class G License is preferred.
  • An understanding of fire, rescue, and emergency medical services generally; ability to successfully complete London Fire Services’ Staff Development Program objectives for a Communication Operator.
  • Awareness and understanding specific to disaster response and mitigation policies and standard operational guidelines is an asset.

Fire Prevention Inspector

Our Inspectors guard public and firefighter safety through the education and enforcement of the Ontario Fire Code, identification of hazardous conditions and elimination of fire hazards. They also assist in the development of fire safety plans and in determining the cause and origin of fires. Findings from investigations are used to develop strategies and safety programs. The Fire Prevention Inspector plays a key role in preventing fire related incidents while enhancing public safety and quality of life within the community.

Qualifications:

Successful completion of a diploma or certification related to fire prevention inspection, completed an applicable NFPA program and/or IFSAC or Pro Board certification, and a good working knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, and other applicable legislation and regulations.

Additional Training and Licenses:

  • Knowledge of building construction and computer proficiency is a definite asset.
  • Possess strong report writing skills, maintain detailed records, analyze, and interpret statistical data and demonstrate problem-solving skills.
  • Show a proven ongoing dedication to outstanding customer service, public safety, and continued professional development.
  • The applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Training would be considered an asset:
    • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector
    • NFPA 1035 Public Fire & Life Safety Education
    • NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
  • Valid Ontario G class driver’s license.
