To be a good ally, it’s important to actively embrace anti-racist. This means committing to continuous learning. As society changes, so do our ideas, beliefs, and values, requiring us to deepen our understanding, engage in meaningful discussions, and ask critical questions that go beyond surface-level understanding. 

On this page, you will find resources to support your journey toward becoming anti-racist. These include information on the history of racism and discrimination affecting various equity-denied groups in Canada, along with tools to enhance your “anti-hate toolkit”. 

Anti-Black Racism in London, Ontario: This video, created by WeBridge for the Stop Tolerhating campaign, showcases the experiences of Londoners facing anti-Black hate in London, Ontario. It also explains what anti-Black hate is and its effects on the Black community in London. 

Periphery: Periphery is a short film that explores the diverse lived experiences of Jewish individuals in Canada, highlighting the rich ethnic diversity within Toronto’s Jewish community. It delves into Jewish culture, celebrations, and heritage while emphasizing the intersection of gender, religion, nationality, and sexuality, offering a multifaceted view of Jewish identity.

Canadian Holocaust resources: This resource, created by the Government of Canada, provides insights into the history and impacts of the Holocaust, with a specific focus on Canada’s connection to these events. 

Indigenous experiences with racism and its impact: This fact sheet, created by the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health, explores various forms of racism experienced by Indigenous Peoples in Canada. It focuses on raising awareness of how racism impacts health outcomes, vaccine access, chronic diseases and illness, and cultural practices. The resource aims to educate on Indigenous issues, emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges to improve health equity and cultural understanding.

Disability Rights Movement in Canada: This resource by the Canadian Encyclopedia provides a helpful historical context on the disability rights movement in Canada over the 20th century. It provides information on the discrminatory legislations that existed, successful activism efforts to address them, and highlights the barriers that people with disabilities have and continue to face in areas like employment, education, and transportation. 

Anti-Indigenous Racism in Canada: These three facts sheets,  created by the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health, examine how structural racism affects Indigenous Peoples in Canada. They also provide guidance on developing anti-racist policies and programs to address these issues, offering a practical framework for change. 

Integrational Impact of Residential Schools (part one, part two): This two-part video series focuses on the intergenerational impacts of residential schools on the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, with first-hand accounts and experiences from relatives and survivors. 

Decolonization Is for Everyone: A TED talkA TED talk by Nikki Sanchez that discusses the ways in which colonization is evident in everyday life and what decolonization looks like. 

Anti-Asian Racism: What Can We Learn from Our Past?: This blog, created by the National Film Board of Canada, features a curated collection of films and media exploring the impacts of anti-Asian racism. It offers historical context on exclusionary practices and events in Canada, while also highlighting the experiences of navigating Asian-Canadian identity. 

Islamophobia is… more than Hate Crimes: Created by Islamophobia Is.., this video highlights how Islamophobia manifests far beyond explicit violence and outright harassment. The powerful video illustrates how Islamophobia has been normalized in more subtle, complex ways. 

25 Interesting Facts about Muslims: A  fact sheet by the Toronto District School Board on historical facts about Islam, Muslims, and their history and contributions, in honour of Islamic Heritage.

The Pervasive Reality of Anti-Black Racism in Canada: This resource from Boston Consulting Group offers a comprehensive snapshot of anti-Black racism in Canada. It includes key statistics and illustrates how systemic and interpersonal racism impacts Black Canadians in areas such as health, education, employment, and other lifestyle factors. These insights highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Black Canadians in their daily lives.

2SLGBTQIA+ Histories and Identities in Canada: The Canadian Museum of History provides a collection of resources and articles detailing the history of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in Canada, including key moments and notable activism efforts. The collection also provides education on the history of systemic laws and practices, covering the criminalization and decriminalization of gender and sexuality rights. Additionally, it features firsthand accounts highlighting the successes, challenges, and triumphs of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
