Wellington Gateway enters final phase as Rapid Transit construction progresses

The Wellington Gateway project is entering its final phase of construction, with work beginning Monday, August 31, weather permitting, on the remaining section of Wellington Road between Watson Street and south of Base Line Road East.

Phase 2B will complete the remaining major construction work needed to build out the Wellington Road Rapid Transit corridor. This includes widening the road, installing two centre-running transit lanes, building new transit stations, and replacing underground infrastructure.

This milestone comes as other sections of Wellington Gateway near completion. Phase 2B is the final phase of the project, with construction continuing through 2029 and some final restoration work carrying over into 2030.

What to expect starting August 31

Crews have begun mobilizing the Phase 2B area, including temporary road construction and traffic control setup.

Starting Monday, August 31, one lane in each direction will be closed between Frank Place and Wellington Court.

Enbridge Gas is also moving gas infrastructure to make room for the project. Drivers may see occasional lane closures while this work is underway.

Access to Victoria Hospital, local businesses and properties will be maintained throughout construction. Pedestrian access will remain available on at least one side of the road, and the City is continuing to coordinate with the hospital to maintain access for emergency services.

Drivers should follow posted signs and detour routes, use caution, allow extra travel time and plan ahead.

Traffic impacts

Wellington Road will remain open throughout construction, with at least one lane in each direction. Traffic will shift as crews move through different parts of the project.

Work in 2026 and 2027 will focus north of Whetter Avenue, with construction shifting south towards Base Line Road East by late 2027.

Rapid Transit progress

As Wellington Gateway moves into its final phase, other parts of London's Rapid Transit network are also taking shape. 

This summer, crews have continued to make progress across the network.

Clark's Bridge is now widened and complete. The bridge between Grand Avenue and South Street now has two traffic lanes, dedicated transit lanes and a new multi use path for people walking and cycling. Asphalt, red transit lane markings and permanent pavement markings were completed this summer. Landscaping and other finishing work will continue through 2026.

Wellington Gateway Phase 3 is nearing completion. The road between Wilkins Street and Harlech Gate has been paved, centre-running transit lanes have been painted, and transit shelters and new traffic signals are in place. Remaining work includes final station work, landscaping, cleanup and restoration.

Wellington Gateway Phase 4 is also nearing completion. Underground infrastructure between Harlech Gate and the Wellington Commons entrance is complete. Crews are completing transit stations, permanent traffic signals, the multi use path, landscaping, surface asphalt, and red centre-running transit lanes.

Construction continues on Phase 2A of Wellington Gateway, from Wilkins Street to Base Line Road East. Crews are continuing work on underground infrastructure, road widening and other improvements needed to accommodate the new centre-running Rapid Transit lanes.
