Temporary taste or odour from your tap water in south London? Don‘t worry, the water is still safe to drink

Londoners in the south end of the city might notice that their drinking water has a taste and odour to it this time of year, but do not worry – it is still safe to consume.

This seasonal taste and odour change is caused by naturally occurring organic compounds in Lake Erie. This is a temporary change that we anticipate will last approximately a week.

Residents can reduce the taste or odour with a cartridge water filter, or by placing a water pitcher in the fridge before consumption.

The Elgin Area Water Treatment Plant regularly collects samples to test the water quality and can make adjustments as needed if conditions change.

About London’s water system

London’s drinking water comes from two Great Lakes. About 85% comes from Lake Huron, and the remaining 15% comes from Lake Erie. More than 12,000 water quality tests are conducted annually to ensure our water’s quality and taste.
