Temporary overnight closure of Highbury Avenue over Highway 401

Highbury Avenue over Highway 401, as well as Highway 401 itself, will be closed overnight on Wednesday, September 16, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow crews to install large structural beams, known as girders, that will support the new bridge.  

During the closure, motorists will not be able to cross Highway 401 using Highbury Avenue. A signed detour will be in place for the northbound and southbound traffic that will require drivers to use Pond Mills Road via Bradley Avenue and Wilton Grove Road.  

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted detour signs and allow additional time when travelling through the area.

The overnight closure is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if required. 

What is MTO doing? 

The overnight closure is a part of the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) Highbury Avenue South underpass bridge replacement and interchange rehabilitation project.

The MTO project includes replacing the Highbury Avenue bridge over Highway 401 and making improvements to the Highway 401 interchange.

The work is now at the stage where crews are installing the structural beams or girders for the new bridge. 

What is the City doing? 

At the same time, the City of London is completing a separate rehabilitation project on Highbury Avenue South.  

The City is reconstructing Highbury Avenue South and making improvements to the stormwater system. The project also includes repairs to the Commissioners Road and Bradley Avenue underpasses and the signalized intersection on Commissioners Road, west of Highbury Avenue South.  

While the two projects are separate, they are taking place in the same area and may affect travel through Highbury Avenue South and the Highway 401 interchange.
