Road closure on Sunningdale Road West

Sunningdale Road West between Wallingford Avenue and Robbie’s Way will be closed beginning Monday, August 24. This closure will be in place until Friday, September 4 while crews install a new culvert. 

This work is part of the City’s Sunningdale Road Widening project. As this area of the city continues to develop, upgrades are needed to keep up with increasing traffic and to improve infrastructure. 

What is a culvert?  

A culvert is a structure that allows water to pass under or around infrastructure, such as a road or railroad. Culverts help prevent flooding, minimize erosion, and maintain roads in good condition longer. 

Transportation impacts 

Drivers are advised to expect traffic delays if traveling in this area. Through traffic will be detoured around the closure using Wonderland Road North, Fanshawe Park Road West, and Richmond Street. Drivers should give themselves some extra time when traveling, use navigation apps to plan routes, and leave a little earlier to get to where they need to go.  

Local access will be maintained along Sunningdale Road for residents and businesses. 

Residents can access the Wallingford Avenue area using Sunningdale Road from the west. Access to Meadowlands Way, Village Walk Boulevard, Robbie’s Way and local businesses will be maintained on Sunningdale Road from the east.  

Road widening work this fall 

After this culvert is completed, work will then shift to widening Medway Creek bridge along Sunningdale Road beginning this fall. More information will be shared when this construction is confirmed to begin.  

The Sunningdale Road Widening project includes reconstructing the roadway between Wonderland Road North and Richmond Street, upgrading underground infrastructure, adding sidewalks, and constructing cycling improvements. Work is beginning this year, and improvements will continue until early 2028.
