Community spirit shines as London reveals City sweeper names

The City of London celebrated Public Works Week in a big way at its annual Touch-A-Truck event on Saturday, May 23, where residents of all ages gathered at the Adelaide Operations Centre to explore City trucks and meet the public workers who keep London running.

A highlight of this year’s event was the much-anticipated reveal of the winning names from the City’s “Name a Sweeper” contest. After weeks of community submissions and voting, Londoners officially named two of the City’s hardest-working street sweepers Kevin and Beeper the Sweeper.

The contest invited residents to get creative and engage with Public Works in a fun and interactive way. Community members first submitted name ideas through social media polls, followed by a public vote featuring the top 10 entries. The winning names were unveiled live at the Touch-A-Truck event.

“London residents brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to this year’s street sweeper naming contest,” says Mark Bennet, Manager, Road Operations, and co-chair of the Touch-A-Truck Planning Committee. “It was great to see so many people getting involved by submitting creative names and having some fun while engaging with the City’s public works team.”

The names Kevin and Beeper the Sweeper are displayed on the street sweepers with custom decals, giving residents a chance to spot them out in the community.

The Touch-A-Truck event continues to be a popular way for Londoners to connect with the City’s public workers, offering hands-on experiences with a wide range of municipal vehicles and equipment while highlighting the essential work of Public Works staff.
