Wellington Gateway moves into Phase 2 construction

Starting Wednesday, May 6, 2026 (weather permitting), Phase 2A of the Wellington Gateway construction project will begin, marking the start of the next stage of work.

Phase 2 marks the last stage of major work along the south Rapid Transit corridor. This phase brings together two important parts of the project. Long-overdue underground infrastructure is being replaced and upgraded, while new rapid transit improvements are being built along Wellington Road at the same time.

These underground upgrades include watermains, sewers, and other utilities that are due for renewal. Completing this work now, alongside transit construction, helps reduce future disruption and improves long-term reliability in the area.

To keep traffic moving safely during construction, traffic at the Commissioners Road and Wellington Road intersection will be shifted to the west side of Wellington Road and the south side of Commissioners Road. 

One lane in each direction will remain open, with reduced lanes on Commissioners Road. The sidewalk on the east side of Wellington Road will also be closed. Pedestrians walking through the area are asked to follow posted signage.

Access to the hospital and local businesses will be maintained during construction. Traffic will be staged to keep key access points open, and pedestrian access will remain available on one side of the road.

The City is working closely with the hospital to support continued access, including for emergency services.

These changes will be in place from May through Summer 2026.

Drivers are asked to follow posted signs and detour routes. People travelling through the area should expect delays, use caution, allow extra travel time, and plan ahead using navigation apps such as Waze or Google Maps.

About Phase 2

Work on Wellington Road between Watson Street and Wilkins Street is being completed in two parts. Phase 2A, from Wilkins Street to Base Line Road East, is the first segment and includes the initial traffic changes beginning Wednesday. Phase 2B, from Watson Street to Base Line Road East, will begin later in 2026.

This phase will deliver a new concrete centre median, centre-running rapid transit lanes, and new transit stops at Bond Street, Base Line Road East, and Commissioners Road East.

Construction will continue through 2028, with final restoration work to follow.

About Wellington Gateway

The Wellington Gateway project is one of three rapid transit projects in London. It is designed to improve how people move along this key corridor by making transit faster, more reliable, and less affected by traffic.

Wellington Road is being rebuilt to support a growing city. By 2051, London’s population is expected to reach about 740,000 people. Upgrading infrastructure now helps ensure the city is ready for that growth.

Rapid transit is about making the bus a more reliable choice. It means buses come more often, move more consistently, and are less affected by traffic. When transit works better, more people use it, which helps reduce congestion for everyone.

This project will revitalize approximately six kilometres of roadway between Downtown and Highway 401. Work includes new transit lanes, improved walking and cycling connections, enhanced streetscapes, and essential underground infrastructure renewal.
