City of London awards 2026 Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship

Tonight, City Council awarded Jamie Lynn Easter with the 2026 Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship.

This annual scholarship for students in an occupational and/or public health and safety related program was established in 2006 by the City of London and CUPE Local 107, as a tribute to employee Tim Hickman, who died in service to the community at age 21.

“Jamie’s dedication to caring for others and promoting health and safety is an inspiring example of the impact young professionals can have in our community,” says Mayor Josh Morgan. “The Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship continues to honour Tim Hickman’s legacy by supporting students who are committed to making workplaces safer. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.”

Jamie has recently graduated from Bachelor of Science and Nursing (BScN) program at University of Windsor. She is also an Authorized Registered Nurse Prescriber with diverse acute care experience across medical–surgical, maternal–newborn, mental health and community settings. As both a nursing student and a mother of two young hockey players, she observed recurring safety risks, particularly for first-year athletes, whose developmental stage and emerging health literacy can limit their ability to recognize danger. She is motivated by opportunities to translate evidence-informed knowledge into practical strategies that protect vulnerable populations, especially children. Jamie believes that nursing extends beyond bedside care into proactive community engagement and prevention.

“Supporting young people who are committed to health and safety is a powerful way to honour Tim’s memory,” says Shirley Hickman, the mother of Tim Hickman, for whom the scholarship is named. “This scholarship gives students the opportunity to learn, lead, and carry forward a culture of safety, one that could save lives.”

Jamie Lynn Easter will receive $3,000 to support her future health and safety endeavors.
