Temporary Emergency Warming Centre Activated at Boyle Memorial Community Centre

The City of London has activated a temporary emergency warming centre at Boyle Memorial Community Centre and will be extending warming centre services at this location overnight from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. to provide additional capacity during the extreme cold weather, as the need for spaces exceeds what is available among community service providers.

“The City has been working closely with the Middlesex-London Health Unit as well as our community service providers to prepare for the extreme cold weather. Teams from across the City of London are once again stepping up to offer additional temporary shelter during this extremely difficult weather, to keep our most vulnerable community members safe,” said Mayor Josh Morgan.

The Middlesex London Health unit has extended its extreme cold weather warning with cold temperatures expected to remain until Tuesday evening.

The extension of the warming centre overnight is a temporary measure and not a finalized plan for future cold weather responses. Staff will be reporting back to Council with a broader report at a future meeting of the Community and Protective Services Committee.

 Recreation programming:

If overnight warming services are required, programming at Boyle Memorial Community Centre will be temporarily discontinued during this period. Warming services will end each morning at 9 a.m. to allow for cleaning during the day.

 Daytime warming centres:

The City of London has a protocol for using select community centres as daytime warming centres during regular operating hours in the event of an extreme weather alert. Those centres include:

  • East Lions Community Centre
  • North London Optimist Community Centre
  • South London Community Centre
  • Canada Games Aquatic Centre
  • Carling Heights Community Centre

Other community spaces including libraries and malls also provide informal warming services during their operating hours.

Donations:

If members of the community would like to provide donations during this extreme cold weather, we encourage Londoners to please send donations to partner agencies and the City will coordinate with the partners on needs.
