Dundas Street between Rectory Street and Ontario Street to reopen to traffic in Old East Village

Phase 1 of the Dundas Street Infrastructure Renewal project has completed for the year, and Dundas between Rectory Street and Ontario Street will reopen to traffic today by approximately 3 p.m.

Construction along Dundas Street began in the spring to complete a number of underground and street level infrastructure improvements. Aging sewers and watermains have been upgraded, and overhead utilities have been relocated underground.

Aboveground, the new streetscape has been built to improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders. Work included widening the sidewalks, adding trees, and installing new street lights which are brighter for shoppers and diners on Dundas Street. The changes to Dundas Street are designed to help ensure safe, comfortable transportation options, and an enhanced experience for everyone visiting Old East Village.

A separated eastbound bike lane has also been created on the south side of Dundas to help visitors reach Old East Village, and will soon connect to other nearby protected bike lanes when phase 2 of the Dundas Street Infrastructure Renewal project is completed next year.

As construction progressed during the COVID-19 pandemic, City staff and contractors worked hard to complete this major infrastructure project with added measures to ensure the health and safety of crews, staff and the public. Some finishing touches remain in the block between Rectory and Ontario Streets which will be completed in the spring. This final work includes planting trees and adding streetscaping elements like new bike racks and placing permanent concrete sidewalks.

The second phase of the Dundas Street Infrastructure Renewal project will begin next year with similar improvements being made between Adelaide and English Streets.
