Starting Monday, March 16, 2026 (weather permitting), York Street will be closed between Wellington Street and Colborne Street until approximately the fall of 2026, as construction resumes on the York Street and Wellington Infrastructure Renewal project.
The Colborne and York intersection will remain open during this time for north and south traffic, and access to local businesses and parking will be maintained.
Sidewalk closures and restrictions will be in place during construction. Safe, accessible pedestrian paths will be provided on at least one side of the road wherever possible.
Drivers should expect delays and follow detour signage to reach their destinations.
Transit riders are encouraged to visit the LTC website for the latest service updates.
Why is this work happening?
The underground pipes and sewers along York Street have reached the end of their lifespan. They need to be replaced to prevent problems like flooding, leaks, or backups. This work includes installing new water, sanitary, and storm pipes, which will also help keep the Thames River healthy and support future growth in the area.
Future impacts
The York and Colborne intersection will be fully closed starting in July 2026 and is expected to last until approximately September 2026.
Additional work between Clarence Street and Wellington Street will also take place in 2026 but will only require temporary lane restrictions.
Project background
This multi-year project began in 2024 and is being completed in stages to help maintain access to homes, businesses and traffic.
Work began in 2024 with utility relocations on York Street between Clarence Street and Wellington Street. Construction continued in 2025 on York Street between Clarence Street and Wellington Street and on Wellington Street between King Street and Horton Street East.
In 2026, work will focus on York Street between Wellington Street and Colborne Street, including the York and Colborne intersection. Final surface restoration is planned for 2027.
