Upcoming watermain improvements in north and central London may cause temporary water discolouration

Properties in the north and central areas of London may experience water discolouration on Thursday July 29 beginning at 9 a.m. as a result of planned watermain improvements being made in the area.

The City assures residents that the water is safe, and any potential discolouration from rust will be temporary.

Crews will be installing a new watermain chamber underneath the intersection of Regent Street and Maitland Street. The work will alter the normal direction of water flow in numerous watermains, which has the potential to release particles of rust from the interior surfaces of older, cast iron pipes. Although this does not represent a health concern, residents in the area may experience a slight yellow or orange discolouration temporarily in their tap water and may wish to avoid washing laundry this day.

The affected area will be generally bordered by Huron Street to the north, Horton Street to the south, Richmond Street to the west and Highbury Avenue to the east.

The City’s Water Operations staff will be working throughout the day to discharge any discoloured water that occurs to help reduce the impact to properties

The watermain on Maitland Street will be shut down while this work is underway, but water service interruptions are not expected tomorrow.

The watermain on Maitland Street is one of the main lines that feeds water into London and was built in the 1960s. Construction at the Regent and Maitland intersection is planned to continue until later this fall as improvements continue to be made to the watermain. However, any discolouration is not anticipated to last beyond Thursday.

Anyone experiencing water pressure problems or discolouration after July 29 should call the City’s Water Operations at 519-661-4739 or report the issue online.
