Temporary overnight closure: Wellington Street between King Street and Horton Street

Wellington Street will be closed overnight on Thursday, May 18, from midnight until approximately 6 a.m. on Friday, May 19, from King Street to Horton Street, to allow for the activation of temporary traffic signals at the Wellington Street and York Street intersection as part of the Wellington Gateway Phase 1 project.

During this time, drivers travelling northbound and southbound along this section of Wellington Street will be detoured around the closure using Richmond Street. Motorists travelling east and west on York Street will be directed to Waterloo and Clarence Streets.

As a reminder, lane restrictions will continue to be in place at Wellington Street from Queens Avenue to just north of the Thames River when the road reopens.

Drivers are encouraged to use navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps to find alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Warning signs will be installed to help guide traffic around the temporary closure.

Sidewalk access will be maintained on at least one side of the road during construction. Pedestrians are advised to follow signs to navigate the construction zone safely and are encouraged to use nearby streets to reach their destinations.

Some LTC routes and stops may be impacted during construction. Transit riders are advised to visit the LTC website for the most up-to-date information.

About the Wellington Gateway:

The Wellington Gateway is the third rapid transit project to be constructed in London with the goal of increasing the frequency and reliability of transit while improving traffic capacity.

The project will revitalize approximately 6 km of roadway between Downtown and Highway 401, widening Wellington Road/Street to build continuous transit-only lanes and adding new streetscape elements as well as transportation improvements above ground, while repairing and replacing aging sewers, watermains and other underground infrastructure.

The project is expected to be constructed between 2023 and 2027.

Phase 1 of the project is currently under way on Wellington Street between York Street and the south branch of the Thames River. Construction of phase 1 is anticipated to be completed in December 2023, with some planned carry-over work in 2024.
