City of London Launches 2026 Tree Canopy Conservation Program

The City of London is now accepting applications for the 2026 intake of the Tree Canopy Conservation Program, which provides financial support to help property owners care for and preserve mature trees on private property.

The program is part of the City’s Urban Forest Strategy, which sets a long-term target of achieving 34% tree canopy cover by 2065. Reaching this goal requires both planting new trees and extending the life of existing mature trees, many of which are located on privately owned land.

The Tree Canopy Conservation Program provides funding assistance to eligible property owners to support the management of mature trees. To qualify, trees must be 40 centimeters or greater in diameter, and all work must be completed by a qualified arborist to ensure proper care and safety. A key feature of the program is that property owners do not need to live at the residence to apply, broadening eligibility to include non-resident owners of qualifying properties. Residents are encouraged to review eligibility requirements and program details before applying.

Eligible work includes practical tree care that improves health and stability, such as structural pruning, removal of dead or hazardous branches, cabling and bracing, soil or root care, and pest management. These proactive measures go beyond basic trimming and help extend the life of mature trees. The program reimburses eligible costs up to a maximum of $1,000 per tree.

“The Tree Canopy Conservation Program is about helping people take care of the mature trees that already make our neighbourhoods special. As Canada’s Forest Capital, London has a shared responsibility to protect and preserve its urban forest and this program is one way we can all be part of that,” said Paul Yeoman, Director, Parks and Forestry.
