City Hall front entrance remains temporarily closed

The front entrance of City Hall will remain closed due to critical repairs to the front canopy. During this time, access to City Hall is available from the north entrance located off Reginald Cooper Square.

While repairs take place, the front circle will be maintained for vehicle traffic with minor intermittent impacts and a reduced number of parking spaces. The accessible parking space and the accessible access ramp will remain in service.

The front entrance is projected to reopen on November 29, 2024.

Background information

In March 2024, repairs began on the City Hall canopy to address issues caused by water leaks and structural concerns. The initial repairs included asbestos abatement, soffit removal and replacement of aged mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

During the demolition and abatement process, additional structural concerns were discovered, including soffit framing that requires reinforcement and a damaged drain from the balcony that must be replaced. This structural damage could only be identified once construction began since the overhang is a completely enclosed area with limited access.

Additional repairs, including adjustments to the soffit dimensions for structural support and heat tracing of the water pipes to mitigate potential flooding are required.

Due to these critical repairs, additional time and funding are required to ensure the safety and longevity of the City Hall front entrance.
