As many Londoners come together to celebrate Diwali on November 1, the City of London would like to remind residents planning backyard fireworks to please keep safety top of mind and show neighbours #LdnKindness by adhering to the Fireworks By-law.
City Council has permitted backyard fireworks for Diwali celebrations on Friday, November 1 between dusk and 11 p.m. Londoners are reminded that fireworks are not permitted to be discharged into City parks or streets.
There will be a permit for a public fireworks display for the Diwali Dhamaka event at Centennial Hall on Sunday, November 10. Please visit the Fireworks webpage for more information on fireworks permits.
Safety is key, whether you are planning a large fireworks display or just using sparklers. Remember, sparklers can get extremely hot and cause burns if not handled properly.
Only adults who understand the risks and follow essential safety measures should handle fireworks. Always keep a water hose or bucket nearby, and be mindful of wind conditions, as strong winds can increase danger.
When lighting diyas and candles, place them securely in a sturdy holder on a heat-resistant surface, well away from anything flammable.
In the event of fire or personal injury that requires immediate attention, residents are reminded to call 9-1-1.
To register a complaint regarding fireworks, please contact the London Police Service non-emergency line at 519-661-5670. Police will triage the call and either attend themselves or refer the matter to By-law Enforcement for response.
We wish everyone a safe and joyous Diwali!
