City of London cancels outdoor programming in response to poor air quality

Environment Canada’s Special Air Quality Statement for London is still in place, and the Middlesex-London Health Unit is updating its guidance as the Air Quality Health Index is likely to reach 10+ or Very High Risk. The current air quality is sitting at 4, and is anticipated to be in the area of 6 tomorrow. Forecasting shows that air quality is expected continue to improve over the coming days.

Outdoor programming cancellations

The City is adjusting some programming in response to the ongoing Special Air Quality Statement in effect for London.

While most City services are continuing uninterrupted, all outdoor recreation activities scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 28 have been cancelled.

In addition, Storybook Gardens will remain closed today. All City-operated grass soccer fields, baseball diamonds and cricket pitches are also closed, and rentals for these amenities are cancelled. The outdoor movie night scheduled to take place at Forest Hill Park this evening is also cancelled.

Those impacted by these cancellations are being contacted directly and will be provided updates on any future cancellations or other changes.

Community centres remain open

Middlesex-London Health Unit recommendations

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is encouraging everyone in London to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke. People should be aware of their sensitivity to air pollution and take appropriate measures to protect their health, including avoiding strenuous outdoor activity and limiting time outside as much as possible.

The Health Unit will continue to monitor the situation and will provide further updates, should it become necessary. For more information, please visit the Middlesex-London Health Unit’s website.
