Wait times

There is a high demand for Rent-Geared-to-Income Housing in London and Middlesex County. Most applicants wait several years for housing to become available, and some households may wait longer than 10 years. How long you wait depends on several factors, including your application date, the buildings and unit sizes you select, your household composition, your household's priority status and how often units become available.

Because these factors can change, City of London staff cannot predict how long you will wait for housing. Staff are not able to provide a more specific wait time if you call or ask about your application.

How households are prioritized

When a housing unit becomes available, housing providers follow rules to decide who receives an offer. The unit must be the right size for the household, and the household must meet the rules for that housing.

Learn more about how households are selected for available units

Housing providers give priority to the following groups, in the order listed below, when making housing offers:

  1. Households with Special Priority status, including eligible households where someone has experienced abuse or human trafficking. Specific eligibility requirements apply. Provincial rules require all households with Special Priority status to be housed before households in other categories.
  2. Households already living in RGI housing who need a smaller unit, because their current unit is too large under local housing rules.
  3. Households with Urgent Status and households on the chronological waitlist. These groups are described below.
  • Urgent Status is a priority previously given to eligible households facing certain urgent housing, medical or social needs. New Urgent Status applications are no longer accepted. Households that already have this status are still considered under the placement rules.
  • The chronological waitlist is for eligible households without priority status. Households are considered based on the date they became eligible for RGI housing, starting with those who have waited the longest.

After the first two priority groups are considered, providers offer:

  • One unit to a household with Urgent Status.
  • The next four units to households on the chronological waitlist.

This is called the 20% Urgent Status and 80% chronological waitlist placement ratio.

These rules do not tell you how long you will wait or when you will receive a housing offer.
