Saturday, April 1 marks the London Fire Department’s 150th anniversary, and a century and a half of proudly serving the London community as a professional fire department.
The London Fire Department began service on April 1, 1873, and has been serving Londoners ever since. The equipment, apparatus and personnel have changed over the years, but the ongoing commitment to keeping Londoners safe remains the same.
“The London Fire Department is proud to be celebrating this milestone of serving our London community for 150 years”, said Acting Fire Chief, Richard Hayes. “Over the years the fire department has expanded beyond simply fighting fires. We have a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to delivering fire prevention education programs, conducting building inspections and fire investigations, and those who respond to a wide range of emergency and medical incidents including water and ice rescue, hazardous material events, technical rescue, and auto extrication. The frontline staff continue to provide a high-quality service due to the support staff in Administration, Apparatus, Communications and Training Divisions. The commitment of all personnel is to perform their daily duties with the goal of keeping Londoners safe.”
To celebrate this milestone, Londoners are encouraged to follow the London Fire Department on social media @ldnontfire as we look back in time and stay tuned for special events being planned with community partners throughout this celebratory year.
