Preparations underway to open City of London Community Gardens with new COVID-19 related guidelines

The Province of Ontario is now allowing community gardens to open. This means preparations are now underway to physically get the gardens ready, and to identify appropriate guidelines for gardeners this season. The City’s gardens will open as soon as possible, and the opening date will be shared once it is confirmed.

For now, Londoners should avoid going to the gardens until we have confirmed that they are open. The gardens can’t open until all measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 have been identified and are in place.

Here is what this means for London’s Community Gardens and our registered gardeners:

  • Community gardens on City land will be able to open this season, but only after all public health and operational requirements are met.
  • Gardeners will be required to follow new COVID-19 guidelines. We are working with the Middlesex London Health Unit to identify any requirements that will need to be put in place.
  • Since the City moved to minimal operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the gardens were ordered closed. With that, we have not been getting them ready to open. We are now working as quickly as we can, but they will not be open by May 1 (which is when they usually open). We will share the opening date as soon as it can be confirmed.
  • Gardens will be open to registered gardeners only and will remain closed to the public.

There are a few more plots available if Londoners want to register at london.ca/communitygardens.

Updates will be shared as information is confirmed.
