Lane restrictions begin for construction of the Wellington Gateway Phase 3 and Phase 4

Starting Monday, July 15, construction begins for both Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the Wellington Gateway rapid transit project, and lane restrictions will begin along Wellington Road between Wilkins Street and Exeter Road.

During this time, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Wellington Road, and turning lanes will be maintained wherever possible to support access to properties and businesses along the corridor.

This year, crews will be focusing their work on the east side of Wellington Road. Construction in 2025 will focus on the west side of Wellington Road.

Phase 3 project area

Phase 3 of the Wellington Gateway will be reconstructing Wellington Road between Wilkins Street and Harlech Gate. As part of the 2024 work, the intersection of Southdale Road and Wellington Road will experience construction activity beginning with lane closures to facilitate the installation of temporary traffic signals. Work at this intersection will extend east to Wellingsboro Road and west to Nadine Avenue.

People driving are advised to expect delays and plan ahead using navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps. Drivers are reminded to zipper merge when approaching reduced lanes and watch their speed around construction zones.

Some LTC stops along this section of Wellington Road may be impacted during construction. Transit riders are encouraged to visit the LTC website for the most up-to-date information.

Sidewalk access will be maintained on at least one side of the road during construction. People walking are advised to follow signs to reach their destination.

Businesses will remain open and accessible during construction.

About the Wellington Gateway project

The Wellington Gateway project is one of three rapid transit projects moving forward in London, with the goal of increasing the frequency and reliability of transit on this important corridor, where rapid transit buses will be travelling in dedicated lanes to help ease traffic flow.

The project aims to revitalize approximately 6 km of roadway between Downtown and Highway 401, widening Wellington Road/Street to add transit-only lanes and enhance active transportation connections and other transit and streetscape elements, while upgrading and replacing servicing utilities and other underground infrastructure.

Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the Wellington Gateway are a multi-year project and will be built in stages to facilitate construction while continuing to allow road access. Subject to weather and project needs, Stage 2 is planned for construction in 2025 along the west side of Wellington Road from Wilkins Street to Exeter Road, followed by Stage 3 in 2026, which will include the installation of bus platforms and centre medians, as well as surface asphalt, pavement markings, road line painting and other landscaping enhancements.
