Winter Storm – What you need to know

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for London-Middlesex.

London is expected to experience significantly reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions due to heavy snowfall and total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 cm in some areas late Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Londoners are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel and to drive safely on highways and local roads if they need to commute during the snowstorm. Parking lots, walkways and sidewalks may become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous and pedestrians are advised to be cautious and watch for hazardous conditions.

Branches or electrical wires could break under the weight of ice and snow. Londoners are being asked to watch for these elements and report them through our Service London portal.

Salting and sanding roads and sidewalks

City crews are out applying sand and salt to roads and sidewalks and will continue to do so during the snowfall. On-street parking is suspended for this evening in order to allow plows the room they need to manoeuvre. The City is monitoring road conditions and will update the london.ca/snow webpage throughout the storm. Residents can report slippery conditions to the City online.

Parking

Overnight on-street parking is banned until further notice and registration to park overnight is closed. Please move vehicles off of streets to make sure City vehicles can get through.

Power outages

Snowfall could cause power outages across the city. Visit londonhydro.com and sign up for outage notifications to receive estimated restoration times and updates delivered by text, email, or phone.

If you see a potential electrical danger, such as tree branches on powerlines or downed powerlines, please contact London Hydro’s emergency line as soon as possible for their team to respond at 519-661-5555.

If you notice a traffic or pedestrian signal not working, please report it by calling 519-661-2641.

If you have to travel and a traffic signal is out, remember to treat intersections like a four-way stop.

Tree issues and fallen branches

Residents can report a tree issue, such as fallen branches, through our Service London portal.
If you see a tree limb on powerlines or electrical equipment, please call London Hydro at the emergency number 519-661-5555.

Community centres

City of London community centres remain open and Londoners are always welcome to come in to get out of the elements.

London Public Library locations are also available during their regular hours of operation as heating and cooling centres when a heat or cold alert has been declared. The Central Library is located at 251 Dundas Street and is open:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9 a.m.–9 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

In the case of extreme weather, Londoners should check the London Public Library’s website or social media as library locations may be closed or have reduced hours.

Emergency kits

Make preparations to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. Store the items in backpacks, duffel bags or luggage so you can easily take the kit with you in case you need to evacuate. Keep it in a cool, dry area of your home. Ensure that every household member knows where the emergency kit is located. Emergency kit checklist.

Recreation programs

Londoners are encouraged to visit our closures and cancellations webpage for updates related to recreation facility closures and program cancellations.
