Tim Hickman Memorial Scholarship Funding Available for Health and Safety Students

The City of London is excited to announce that application submissions are now being accepted for the 2021 Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship. Each year, this scholarship awards $3000 to a student currently enrolled full-time in an occupational or public health and safety related program at a southwest or central-west Ontario college or university. Programs may include occupational safety/health/hygiene, occupational or physical therapy, nursing, medicine, emergency services or other related fields.

“If you are a student promoting occupational or public health and safety through an impactful initiative or idea, we encourage you to apply for this scholarship,” says Gary Bridge, Manager of Human Resources and Corporate Services. “This is the perfect opportunity to recognize future leaders in our community who can improve our workspaces and ensure that tragedies like Tim’s life never happen again.”

The scholarship is awarded in memory of Tim Hickman, a part-time City of London arena employee who lost his life on the job on March 23, 1996, at the age of 21. The scholarship represents the importance of raising awareness of occupational health and safety. The scholarship is sponsored by the City of London along with CUPE Locals 107 and 101, with the support of Tim’s family and friends.

“Thank you to the Hickman family for continuing Tim’s legacy and the commitment to promoting safety awareness and the importance of workplace health and safety,” says Mayor Ed Holder.

Applications for the scholarship are due February 28, 2021. For details on how to apply, to view past recipients or learn more about Tim’s story, visit the Tim Hickman Memorial Health and Safety Scholarship page on london.ca.
