Road Closure: Intersection of King and Clarence Streets closes Monday for construction of the Downtown Loop

Beginning Monday, August 9, the intersection of King and Clarence Streets will be closed until later this fall as construction of the Downtown Loop progresses to this area and crews complete necessary work on King Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained for residents and visitors to reach businesses in the area.

Cyclists and pedestrians traveling along Clarence Street will be able to use a temporary crossing near the intersection to travel north and south. Signage will be installed around the closure to notify road users and help pedestrians and cyclists navigate the area safely. Cyclists are asked to dismount when crossing Clarence Street.

Drivers can continue to access nearby parking lots, including the parking garage below Citi Plaza, as well as streets north and south of the construction zone. To reach Citi Plaza and the Central Library parking garage, drivers must use the Wellington Street entrance. Additional “park & pick-up” locations have also been recently added downtown for customers and deliveries.

The areas of King Street undergoing construction will shift as work progresses this year, with one lane of traffic being maintained between Ridout and Talbot Streets. Work on King Street between Talbot and Richmond Streets is near completion with some finishing touches remaining, and both lanes are now open for traffic.

Businesses remain open and accessible while this work is being completed, and pedestrians are asked to look for navigational signage if walking through the area. Transit and vehicle through-traffic continue to be detoured along York Street downtown. Motorist traveling through this area should expect delays while construction is underway. Drivers are reminded to give themselves a little extra time when traveling, and to consider using the Waze app for assistance finding an alternate route.
