Post-secondary students: Welcome to London

The City of London is excited to welcome all post-secondary students to London for the 2023/24 school year.

Welcome to London. We’re glad you’re here.

Whether you are returning to London, or it is your first time in the forest city, moving to a new city can be an exciting challenge. To ensure you get the most out of your time here, we have gathered some information to help you navigate City services and get around London safely.

Getting around the city

Whether you walk, bike, skateboard, or roller blade, enjoy the many benefits that come from being active in your travels around London.

Choosing to ride or roll to your destination is now more comfortable than ever before. Visit london.ca/cycling to plan your route, and check out the new cycling improvements being made across the city. London’s walk map is also available online.

Construction projects underway

While some projects are starting to wrap up, others will take the full construction season to complete. Here are some projects to note:

  • Queens Avenue will soon reopen to traffic between Wellington Street and Richmond Street – this is a key connection through the downtown for westbound traffic.
  • In Old East Village, Quebec Street will be reopening from Dundas Street to just north of Mornington Avenue by mid-September.
  • Adelaide Street North will be closed between McMahen and Elias Streets from September 7 – 9 to lift the second rail bridge piece into place for the Adelaide Underpass project.
  • The Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street intersection is undergoing improvements, requiring lane restrictions until later this year. The transit hub at Masonville Mall is currently not in service and a temporary bus stop is in place at  Jacksway Crescent for routes 10, 13, 16, 25, 34, 90, 92 and 93. Visit the LTC website for the most up-to-date information.

Be sure to plan your route ahead and visit the Renew London website to see if your commute will be impacted. Using navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps is another great way to stay up to date on what areas are impacted.

Garbage and Recycling

Learn about your home’s garbage and recycling collection dates if you’re living off-campus this year. Use the Zone Finder tool to tell you which collection zone you are located in as well as your garbage and recycling collection dates. The Recycle Coach app can also provide you with a personalized collection calendar, collection date reminders sent to your phone or device, and information about how to separate items properly.

There are exciting changes coming to waste collection in London. London will begin a Green Bin program the week of January 15, 2024. A Green Bin container and Kitchen Container will be delivered to curbside households this fall beginning in mid-October and completed mid-December, and more information about how to use the Green Bin, acceptable materials and the updated collection dates for 2024 will be packaged inside the bin.

By-law information

The City’s by-laws will help you enjoy your new neighbourhood, understand your responsibilities as a citizen of London and ensure that your new home is safe.

Some key by-laws you may want to become acquainted with are: parking, property standards, yard maintenance, sound, and rental licensing. If you have any by-law concerns, complaints may be submitted to the City at 519-661-4660 or at enforcement@london.ca.
