Londoners invited to the City’s Touch a Truck event in celebration National Public Works Week

National Public Works Week takes place between May 19-25, 2024, and it is a week that recognizes the City of London’s public works teams.

In celebration, the City is hosting a Touch a Truck event on Saturday, May 25.

Almost 30 trucks and several pieces of equipment will be on display at Earl Nichols Recreation Centre for Londoners to interact with.

Some of the trucks include:

  • A forestry operations bucket truck that helps crews trim and maintain trees and responds to tree damage after a storm.
  • A snow plow that helps keep our streets clear in the winter.
  • A water operations hydro excavator that helps dig holes for water pipe repairs.
  • A waste collection truck that collects Green Bin materials and garbage from the curb and stores them in separate compartments.

Visitors, families and kids can ask questions, learn about the different trucks and equipment, and participate in different activities.

Kids activities at the event

  • Paint the plow – Help add some colour and creativity to the front of one of our City snow plows. The plow will then be used next winter.
  • Dress up and take photos – A photo station will be available for children to wear hard hats, vests, and other personal protective equipment. Kids are also encouraged to come dressed up if they choose.
  • Participate in colouring stations – Colouring sheets of some of your favourite trucks will be available. Share your creations with City staff or take them home with you.

Adults can also learn about careers at the City and speak with our recruitment booth at the event.

Please consider bringing non-perishable food items. They will be collected for donation to the London Food Bank.

About National Public Works Week

National Public Works Week takes place each year in May and is an opportunity for municipalities to celebrate public works and the services these teams provide to communities. Public works contributes to our quality of life in so many areas – our transportation network, water, wastewater and stormwater treatment, public buildings and spaces, parks and grounds, and solid waste management, to name a few. These teams are responsible for exceptional services across the city that directly help Londoners each and every day.
