East London Link construction moves into the Wellington to Waterloo Street block of King Street next week

Starting next week, construction will begin in the west half of the Wellington to Waterloo block of King Street, as part of continued work on Phase 1 of the East London Link project. Construction in this area is expected to last for approximately six months.

Entry to King Street from Wellington Street will be restricted; however, all businesses and properties adjacent to the construction area remain open and can be accessed from Waterloo Street, where King Street will be temporarily converted to two-way traffic in the impacted block.

Pedestrian access will be maintained through the area during construction, and navigational signs will be in place to help guide pedestrians through the construction zone. Cyclists are encouraged to use Dundas Street, where new cycling connections are available for east-west cycling through the core.

Transit impacts

While construction is underway in this area over the next six months, London Transit buses will be temporarily detoured off King Street downtown and will use York Street instead. These changes come into effect on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

Routes that would typically enter downtown from the west along Riverside Drive will be detoured to Wharncliffe Road South, Springbank Road, Horton Street, Ridout Street South and York Street. For more information on this detour, visit London Transit’s Detours and Stop Closures webpage.

A number of transit stops will also be changing as a result of this detour, and riders are advised to plan in advance by checking London Transit’s real-time transit information website for the latest service updates and detour information.

About the East London Link

The East London Link is a multi-year project that will revitalize more than 6 km of road from Downtown to Fanshawe College. The project will add transportation and transit improvements above ground, while repairing and replacing aging sewers, watermains and other underground infrastructure.

Phase 1 East London Link construction began earlier this year between Adelaide Street North and Lyle Street. Construction is planned to be completed in December 2022, with some carry-over work into spring and summer 2023.
