Door-to-door sales and water testing scams

The City of London advises homeowners to use discretion if presented with information from telemarketers or door-to-door salespeople indicating they are conducting water tests and have an affiliation with the City.

Recently, the City has received concerns from residents who received phone calls from people claiming to be contractors working for the City of London. The caller states they need to schedule an appointment to either inspect an internal water valve or perform a water quality test. These are false representations. The City does not use contractors for water quality testing, nor does it sell residents water treatment devices.

Occasionally, City of London staff will contact homeowners regarding water quality issues. In all cases, our staff will have identification to verify they are City employees. On no occasion will City staff attempt to sell any products.

Residents can learn more about Consumer Protection Ontario, and are reminded that:

  • No door-to-door salespeople are authorized to make a health-based test on your water
  • Door-to-door sales of water purifiers, filters, softeners, and treatment devices are prohibited (unless you initiate the transaction)
  • Door-to-door water tests do not tell you about water safety
  • Chemical trickery may make your water look brown just because of natural mineral content
  • If you believe you may have been misled by a telemarketer or door-to-door salesperson, you can identify a scam or fraud at ontario.ca/page/consumer-protection-ontario

London’s drinking water is sourced from Lake Huron and Lake Erie and is treated to surpass provincial quality standards. Residents can learn more about London’s water system at london.ca/water.

If people are contacted for sales of products other than water, and the salesperson suggests they are affiliated with the City of London, please call the City to confirm at 519-661-4739.
