This Saturday, March 7, join your neighbours and the City of London for the Good Neighbourhoods Talk event, a conversation around community building and progress update of the London Strengthening Neighbourhoods Strategy (LSNS) 2017-2020.
The Good Neighbourhoods Talk is an annual event for Londoners to connect with other residents working to build community in neighbourhoods across London. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn about the LSNS strategies and actions that have been implemented over the past year and participate in planning for the fourth year of this resident-driven strategy.
“Wonderful things are happening in neighbourhoods across the city led by community-driven Londoners,” says Cheryl Smith, Managing Director of Neighbourhood, Children and Fire Services. “We’re excited to connect with residents and have these important community building conversations that strengthen and celebrate neighbourhoods.”
New this year, four Londoners will be sharing their inspiring stories about community building in neighbourhoods on topics from inclusion and myth building, to real estate and the power of sharing. The stories will be shared in the “PechaKucha” format, which shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds, for a total of 5 minutes.
Speakers:
Vanessa Brown is a bookseller and award-winning author based in London. She co-wrote London: 150 Cultural Moments, which won a 2017 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Excellence in Conservation. Her most recent book, the Forest City Killer, tells the story of an unsolved murder from London’s past and has won her international acclaim.
Luis Patricio is a research assistant at the London Poverty Research Centre working on two main projects, facilitating the Inclusive Economy Working Group to explore community wealth building opportunities and, Localizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Luis also sits on the Board of London Cycle Link to promote cycling and other campaigns to enhance the human interaction in public spaces.
His passion is to design great places to live through collaboration. In his spare time, he enjoys Aikido, circle dances and comic books.
Marla Marnoch is passionate about building community and real estate. She specializes in Social Impact Real Estate, which sets aside real estate commissions for investment in community initiatives.
Brian Ysebaert is a 36 year old man with low vision and resides in London, Ontario. Brian lives on his own in a one bedroom apartment in east London. Brian is an advocate for people with a disability. Brian believes everyone has the right to the “Good Things in Life”. Over the past several years Brian has been a guest speaker at Fanshawe College for the Developmental Services Worker Program. Brian shares his message of inclusion and belonging with the students. Brian also spoke on a panel during the Inclusion series at Innovation Works. Brian is an entrepreneur, an activist and an incredibly gifted speaker.
Good Neighbourhoods Talk event is taking place on Saturday, March 7, 1-4 p.m. at the BMO Centre London.
