COVID-19 – Fines issued in relation to ‘Freedom Protest’ held in Victoria Park and recent residential gathering

City of London By-law Officers issued two court summons following an investigation into a ‘Freedom Protest’ that took place in Victoria Park on March 20, 2021.

As a result of the investigation, two individuals, a 24-year-old female and a 38-year-old female have each been issued a summons for organizing an outdoor gathering which exceeded the number permitted, contrary to the Reopening Ontario Act. This investigation remains open.

Those who host or organize rallies or gatherings in violation of Provincial regulations can face a minimum fine of $10,000 on conviction.

Additionally, By-law Officers issued a fine to a 21-year-old female for participating in a gathering at a residence on Beaufort Street. Those who host parties or gatherings in violation of Provincial regulations can face a minimum fine of $10,000 on conviction.

With a Province-wide Stay-at-Home Order, Londoners are reminded that indoor gatherings of any size are not permitted. Outside gatherings are limited to members of one’s immediate household only. Those who live alone can have exclusive, close contact with another household.

Throughout the pandemic, City of London By-law officers have focused on upholding restrictions that have been put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community, using all available options including engagement, education and enforcement. By-law officers will continue to respond to complaints and proactively patrol locations where infractions have been observed.

“At a time when cases remain high and we are seeing increased restrictions across Ontario, we appreciate that we continue to see high compliance of regulations,” says Orest Katolyk, Chief By-Law Officer. “We encourage all Londoners to follow the Provincial and local health precautions and restrictions in place as we all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19,”
