With driverless vehicles and connected infrastructure on the horizon in Ontario, the City of London is taking further steps to prepare for the introduction of this technology to our roads.
Recognizing that eventually, the integration of driverless technology will touch nearly all aspects of Londoners’ lives – from street design to physical health, environmental sustainability, accessibility, and data security – the City of London is seeking public feedback to find out what related issues are top of mind for Londoners.
“The City has identified key areas where we expect connected and driverless technologies to transform our city, and feedback from Londoners will help us continue to hone our strategy for automated vehicles on our roads,” says Shane Maguire, Division Manager, Roadway Lighting & Traffic Control.
Londoners can share their feedback at https://getinvolved.london.ca/automated-vehicles until February 21, 2020. There will be additional opportunities for the public to engage as the City continues to develop its Connected and Automated Vehicle Strategic Plan.
It is anticipated that driverless technology will be readily available within the next 10-20 years, likely bringing sweeping changes to transportation, land use and City services. Because of its transformational potential, a strategic plan is needed to ensure London has the digital and physical infrastructure to support this new technology.
