Londoners are invited to join a new Anti-Black Racism Steering Committee with the Community Diversity & Inclusion Strategy

The Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy (CDIS) is inviting Londoners to apply to be a member of the new Anti-Black Racism Steering Committee.

Following heightened awareness on anti-Black racism in London and elsewhere, members of the CDIS Leadership Table and Working Groups held extensive discussions throughout the summer that led to the recommendation to create a priority focused on addressing systemic anti-Black racism in London. One of the main goals of this priority is to form an Anti-Black Racism Steering Committee comprised of Londoners who understand the impacts of systemic anti-Black racism and oppression.

These members will provide guidance and leadership by developing a work plan with strategies that will be put into action to address systemic anti-Black racism in London. Members will make key decisions around the community engagement plan and process, oversee community outreach, approve agendas and materials for meetings, review feedback from community engagement activities and make recommendations to the CDIS.

“There is no room for racism in our community or any place in Canada,” says Mayor Ed Holder. “I’m proud of our city and the steps we have taken, but there is more work to be done in confronting anti-Black racism in London. Members who come forward will develop actions and solutions that will help our community continue the work to eliminate systemic racism and cultural barriers in the city.”

Those interested in joining the Steering Committee are asked to submit an application by Monday, January 11, 2021. As part of the application, volunteers will be asked to indicate why they are interested in being part of this priority and to identify experience and relevant skills they can bring to the Anti-Black Racism Steering Committee.

Steering Committee members will be asked to commit to one, two-hour virtual meeting per month from February to August 2021. It is anticipated that the Steering Committee will meet every second Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m.

This call for Steering Committee members is the first of many steps to create a new CDIS priority focusing on addressing systemic anti-Black racism. Londoners will have many other opportunities to share feedback and engage in the process that will not require the same level of time commitment as joining the Steering Committee.

About the Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy

The Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy (CDIS) is a living document designed to modify in response to emerging issues.

The CDIS is implemented by Londoners who volunteer their time as members and Chairs of the five working groups and the Leadership Table. The City of London provides support for this community-led group, including booking meetings, taking meeting notes and providing relevant documents and other materials.
