The City will reconstruct the Hyde Park Road and Sunningdale Road West intersection in summer 2021 by installing a two-lane roundabout. This will improve comfort and safety for all road users while helping to accommodate existing and future travel demand. 

As part of this project, sidewalks and in-boulevard bike paths will be installed allowing for future connections to the active transportation network. Additional street lights will also be installed to provide increased visibility. The City will also plant landscape features such as trees, and select grasses to enhance the aesthetics of the roundabout.  

The Hyde Park and Sunningdale Intersection Improvements project is one of London’s Top 10 construction projects this year identified in the City’s Renew London construction program.

The above map shows the construction limits. The City will be reconstructing Hyde Park Road and Sunningdale Road West within 200 meters of the intersection.

The work

This project will create an intersection that improves the comfort and safety for all road users.

As part of this project, the City will install or create:

• a wider roadway approaching the intersection which will include four lanes (two lanes in each direction)
• a roundabout (two lanes wide) at the intersection of Hyde Park Road and Sunningdale Road West
• sidewalks and in-boulevard bike paths along the outside of the intersection
• additional street lights approaching and through the intersection
• bio retention cells (LIDs) to treat road drainage flows before entering the ditch and sewer system
• trees that are native to the region, and select grasses will be planted along the boulevard and in the roundabout center island.

Advance construction work

• relocation of the telecommunications network
• relocation of hydro poles and wires
• tree removals to accommodate the extra space a roundabout requires.

The benefits

This project will result in:

• an intersection that is designed for both existing and future travel demand 
• increased safety for all road users
• lowered idling and air pollution due to fewer stops and shorter delays helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality
• reduced maintenance costs due to the elimination of expenses associated with the upkeep of traffic signals
• reducing the impact of rainfall to downstream ditches and sewers through bio retention cells (LIDs)
• improved aesthetics with landscaping features that are specific to a roundabout intersection
