The City is rehabilitating the Wenige Expressway Bridge by replacing aging infrastructure. There will also be necessary road and culvert improvements to Highbury Avenue South from the Wenige Expressway Bridge to Highway 401 designed for future construction.

This project will also include active transportation improvements by providing a future connection to nearby neighbourhood paths and trails.

The Highbury Avenue – Wenige Expressway Bridge Renewal project is one of London’s Top 10 construction projects this year identified in the City’s Renew London construction program.

The above map shows the Phase 1 construction project limits.

The work

The City completed the following work on Phase One of this project in 2020:

• road repairs to the southbound lanes of the existing bridge and on Highbury Avenue South from Power Street to south of the Thames River
• concrete repairs on the abutments (supports) of the bridge
• upgraded street lighting in the area

The City will finish the following work in 2021:

• road repairs to the northbound lanes from Power Street to the South of the Thames River
• creation of an active transportation connection to nearby neighbourhood paths and trails
• replacing the median from the north of the bridge to Hamilton Road
• street light upgrades

In Phase 2, the City is planning the following work:

• reconstructing Highbury Avenue from Wenige Expressway Bridge to Highway 401, including necessary culvert work to replace ageing infrastructure
• street light upgrades
