The City is beginning to upgrade 80 traffic signal locations in London with new traffic monitoring cameras. Once implemented, the new cameras will provide the City live footage of roads to better confirm and manage traffic incidents across London.
“The new cameras will help inform the City, emergency services, and public transit of collisions or delays that are causing unexpected traffic conditions during peak travel periods,” says Jon Kostyniuk, Traffic and Transportation Engineer at the City of London. “The new traffic cameras will be placed across London on busier roads that have bus routes and high volumes of traffic.”
The City’s traffic management system connects more than 400 signals across London where signal timings can be modified remotely.
The new traffic monitoring cameras will be used by the City for live monitoring of roads only and will not be recording except for limited traffic studies. The cameras are being installed to point only at roads and will not be pointing at private properties.
The new cameras do not record traffic infractions or vehicle speed, and are different than the City’s current red light camera program or the City’s new automated speed enforcement cameras that will be used in the future. The new traffic monitoring cameras will also not be used to collect personal information such as licence plates.
Recently, nine intersections have already been upgraded with the traffic monitoring cameras, and over the coming weeks an additional 16 intersections are scheduled. Installation will continue through the summer and into the fall. While crews upgrade the traffic signals, temporary lane restrictions will be needed at each intersection for approximately a few hours.
