Additional weekly programming begins on Dundas Place to support dining and shopping in the core

Sections of Dundas Street, from Ridout to Wellington Streets, will begin to close to vehicle traffic this week and remain open as a pedestrian and cycling shared space at set times. The road will begin to close to cars on Wednesday, August 4, and the street will be programmed with outdoor activities and performances for the remainder of the summer.

Vehicle traffic will be unable to travel east or west along Dundas Street during these times:

Dundas Street closed between Ridout Street and Talbot Street

  • Wednesdays between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Dundas Street closed between Ridout Street and Wellington Street

  • Thursday and Friday evenings between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.
  • Saturday evenings between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m.
  • Sundays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Throughout July, Dundas Place’s wide sidewalks had been programmed with visual artists and musicians each week. As more people are visiting the area and patios are being added, additional programming is being planned. Some of this entertainment will now be extended into the road.

These road closures will take place each week through August and September. On Wednesdays, the block of Dundas Place outside Budweiser Gardens will be programmed with food trucks and additional outdoor seating. Between Thursdays and Sundays each week, all of Dundas Place will be closed to vehicles at set times while patios can be extended into the street and musicians and artists will be performing.

Businesses along Dundas Place will be coordinating a number of outdoor activities in the street as well. Currently, some of these experiences include:

  • Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, August 14) – This annual comic themed celebration organized by Heroes comic store will return to Dundas Place between Richmond and Clarence Street. Hundreds of free comics will be distributed to visitors.
  • Vintage on the Block (Saturday, August 21) – A vintage street sale organized by both Dugout Vintage and Filthy Rebena will take place on the blocks between Richmond and Wellington Street.
  • Dundas Village Arts (Saturday, August 21) – This celebration of arts is being organized by the Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery and will take place on the block between Clarence and Wellington Street.
  • Thursday Night Art Walk (Thursday evenings) – TAP Centre for Creativity will be programming different areas along Dundas Place with visual and performing artists during the Thursday evening road closures to create a continuous arts walk across multiple blocks for visitors to enjoy.

The City will be collecting feedback from businesses and assessing any changes that might be needed if programming continues in October.

Dundas Place businesses remain open during these road closures, and visitors can still use promo code ‘CORE’ on the Honk app or call Parking Services at 519-661-4537 to take advantage of free two-hour parking in the Core Area. Visitors can also use added park and pick-up locations nearby. Bicycle parking is also available along Dundas Street, and many LTC bus routes are available.

When Dundas Place is not closed to vehicle traffic, temporary traffic changes remain in effect on Dundas Place between Ridout Street and Wellington Street to help improve safety and mobility for all road users during this year’s construction in the core.

The City is reminding residents to continue to follow all current safety measures in place and to maintain physical distancing if visiting Dundas Place.
