Spotlight program

Register your business for the City of London’s Spotlight program to increase safety and security and deter criminal activity at your storefront. Participating businesses receive a Spotlight program sticker to display in their storefront window to inform the public that there are cameras actively monitoring them.

Register your business for the Spotlight program

As part of the Core Area Action Plan, one of the initiatives the City of London has been working on is the Spotlight Program. Through the Spotlight program, Core Area businesses with storefront security cameras can register their cameras with the City of London. The business then receives a Spotlight program sticker to place in their storefront window informing people of the cameras.

The intent of this program is to raise the visibility and awareness of security cameras in the Core Area. More eyes on a public space can make it feel safer. Promoting the extent and coverage of the Core Area’s storefront cameras can deter criminal activities. The stickers also let police know where video footage is available that may help an investigation.

After you register, we will send you a Spotlight sticker to place in your storefront window. Please email spotlight@london.ca or call 519-661-2489, extension 8445 for more information.

Frequently asked questions

What happens after I register?

After registering for the Spotlight program, you will receive an email confirmation and a printable temporary Spotlight program identifier for your storefront window. You will be sent a window sticker within seven to fourteen business days. Display this sticker to let the public and police know you have security cameras.

Am I required to place a sign or sticker in my storefront if I have a camera?

Private businesses are governed by the Personal Information Protection and Electronics Documents Act (PIPEDA) and should review the Act for applicability. For more information visit Guidelines for Overt Video Surveillance in the Private Sector - Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. You may also wish to obtain independent legal advice.

If I have a Coordinated Informed Response trespass permission sticker on my storefront window, do I need a Spotlight program sticker, too?

These are two separate programs that are distinct from one another. Businesses can choose to apply to provide the CIR team with trespass permission on private property and to also be part of the Spotlight program, but one sticker does not account for both programs.

Unlike the Spotlight program, the Coordinated Informed Response (CIR) sticker provides the CIR team with access to enter private property without advanced consent. For more information about the CIR trespass program, please visit london.ca/CIR.
