London's Drinking Water System
Our Mission:
To provide valued water service to our customers, through the delivery of safe,
clean, high quality drinking water of sufficient flow and pressure to enhance
the quality of life and support economic development for the residents and
businesses of London.
Our Pride:
As the City's managers of the water system, we take great pride in the work
that we do and since the late 1800's we have been given the pipes, pumping
stations, reservoirs, and all the hydrants and valves that are underground for
safekeeping. This task is not taken lightly and recent events in Walkerton
and other municipalities in Canada have shed the light on just how important a
safe and reliable drinking water system is to the nation - not just this City.
Some quick facts:
There are over 1,500km of watermain pipe under the streets of London.
There are over 110,000 water meters installed throughout the City.
There are over 6,000 fire hydrants helping to protect your home and business
from a fire.
We test the tap water 1000's of times a year to ensure its quality and
taste.
We boost pressure in 5 different areas of the City, but 80% of the City is
fed by gravity.
We have installed 10 km of acoustic fibre optic cable inside some of our
pipe to help prevent a massive watermain break.
We have 2 back-up well systems in the north east and west parts of the City.
