MARKET LANE REDESIGN - UPDATES

March 2013 - Come Preview the New Market Lane ... Friday, March 8th at 7:00pm

Please join Mayor Joe Fontana and guests this Friday for a preview of the new Market Lane and a sneak peak of the programmable light canopy composed of 1,430 LED coloured lights. The canopy creates dynamic displays with moving, colour-shifting lights. Different atmospheres are created reflecting the changing of the seasons, special holidays and events.

The Preview will also help kick-off a week of special events in downtown London for the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships.

Market Lane will be fully opened for the public to enjoy from March 8 - 17. The Lane will then be partially open on weekends to allow exterior architectural work to proceed safely. Anticipated full re-opening of Market Lane is planned for June 2013.

Market lane is now complete but will remain closed due to safety requirements for the construction site at Fanshawe’ School of Applied and Performance Arts (SAPA) just next door.

The lane can be fully re-opened once all exterior work at SAPA is complete. The anticipated date for re-opening is June 2013. In the meantime, the lane will be partially opened on weekends only.

August 2012 - Start of construction in Market Lane

We are excited to announce that Market Lane is now under construction! The last few months were busy with detailed design and public tender. Hapa Collaborative worked at refining their winning design concept to produce the construction plans and specifications for the project. As a result of the tender process, PLS Landscaping and Excavation Ltd was awarded the contract to re-build Market Lane. The pedestrian laneway is now closed to circulation and will remain so until the completion of the project, estimated for the end of November 2012.

For more details on this construction project, please see the information letter.

December 2011 - Winner announced!

The City of London is pleased to announce the results for the Market Lane Design Competition. The winning design entry is:
Hapa Collaborative from Vancouver, British Columbia, with “Figure Ground”.  The proposal displays a light sky ceiling, a meander bench and luminescent ottomans, along a riverbank border garden. The proposal also includes a wood deck that can be used as a stage, seat or porch adjacent to Fanshawe future School of Applied and Performance Arts. Natural limestone paving and a few Carolinian trees are also part of the plan. Here is the complete proposal of the winning design “Figure Ground”.

According to the Jury, this proposal distinguished itself by:

  • capturing the spirit of London;
  • responding to the need for a pedestrian focused, day and night, all season urban environment;
  • providing opportunities for interaction with the surrounding context and festival activity, and;
  • innovatively responding to the community’s aspirations for the Market Lane.

“HAPA’s winning scheme offers Londoners an opportunity to realize a leading edge design that responds to their needs for a pedestrian focused, day and night, all season urban environment that is both delightful and elegant in its simplicity.” Steve Ries, Chair of the Urban Design Jury for the Market Lane Design Competition.

Please read our news release.Market Lane located on Dundas Street between Talbot and Richmond

Market Lane is a short pedestrian laneway linking Dundas Street to the Covent Garden Market, one of the main hubs in Downtown London today. The John Labatt Centre, a major indoor events location, is also located nearby. This makes Market Lane a unique public space allowing for a pedestrian shortcut to many Downtown destinations.

Market Lane is currently showing signs of needed rejuvenation. A playground that used to be in the space was recently removed. The pavers will be in need of a replacement soon, because of the uneven surface they create. The site furniture is past its life-cycle limit and the space is currently looking uninviting, apart from the mural on the East wall and the painted pillars on the West Wall (funded by Downtown London as a beautification and graffiti control measure).

Market Lane Design Competition

The Market Lane Design Competition is intended to bring creativity, new ideas, and vision to this unique pedestrian space, and to showcase what excellent design can bring to Downtown London. The ultimate goal of the competition is to re-build and re-vitalize Market Lane in time for the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships. By choosing to undertake a design competition, the City of London is looking at a unique opportunity for an innovative and fresh look on public spaces in the Downtown. This is a relatively small project but is in a key location and being redeveloped at a pivotal time. We hope this exciting event can be inspiring both for designers and the community.

A Request for Qualifications was issued on September 14, 2011, inviting design professionals across Canada with a creative approach and project implementation experience to qualify for the Market Lane design competition. A total of 18 qualifying submissions were received from 3 different provinces.

The Teams

The jury selected five teams among many highly qualified submissions. These five teams are:

  • du Toit Allsopp Hillier / Studio F-Minus / Ron Koudys Landscape Architects Inc / Development Engineering Ltd
  • Hapa Collaborative
  • Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg / Stantec
  • Baird Sampson Neuert Architects / Arthur Lierman Landscape Architecture / Nicholson Sheffield Architects
  • Janet Rosenberg + Associates

The second stage of the competition is now to select a design idea and proposal for Market Lane. Each of the five teams will submit their own proposal of what the Market Lane could become.

As part of the public process, an electronic survey was posted on this page and closed in mid November 2011.  Thank you to the more than 350 respondents that provide a variety of helpful comments.  The survey results have been provided to the five teams for consideration as they develop their design proposals. The winning design team will be announced in January.

This winter, the City will display the five submissions to Londoners, with the goal to inspire us to think about how urban design could enhance other locations within our city.
